Two women in a concrete corner wrapped in VELVET Undergrowth towels

VELVET makes towels in four sizes. Each is cut larger than the standard it replaces. Before choosing one, it helps to understand the difference between a bath sheet and a bath towel.

What is the difference between a bath sheet and a bath towel?

Size. A bath towel is the everyday cloth. It wraps from chest to knee and folds small enough to live on a hook. A bath sheet is the larger cloth. It wraps from shoulder to calf and overlaps at the front.

Bath towels are commonly sold at around 70 × 140 cm. Bath sheets are commonly sold at around 90 × 170 cm. Brands vary, so read the centimetres on the label rather than the name.

What are the standard towel sizes?

A towel set usually runs from a small face cloth to a bath sheet, with a hand towel and a bath towel in between. Four sizes cover every job in a bathroom. VELVET cuts each one larger than its standard:

  • The Temple, face towel, 30 × 30 cm. For the face and for small jobs.
  • The Rest, hand towel, 50 × 100 cm. Long enough to hang from a rail and dry both hands in one pass.
  • The Heat, bath towel, 75 × 140 cm. The daily wrap.
  • The Immersion, bath sheet, 100 × 184 cm. The full cover.

Exact measurements and a size-by-size comparison sit on the sizing page.

How big is a bath sheet?

A bath sheet is a metre wide or close to it, and well over a metre and a half long. The Immersion measures 100 × 184 cm. At that length it reaches well past the knee on most people and wraps fully around the body. It suits anyone tall, anyone who likes to be covered from shoulder to shin, and anyone who dries off in a cold room.

How big is a bath towel?

The Heat measures 75 × 140 cm. It is the size most people reach for every day: wide enough to wrap, short enough to hang and dry quickly between uses. It is also the easiest size to fit into a small bathroom with a single rail.

What size is a hand towel or a face towel?

A hand towel lives by the basin. The Rest measures 50 × 100 cm, which is long enough to hang from a rail by one end and dry both hands in a single pass. A face towel is the smallest cloth in the set. The Temple measures 30 × 30 cm, a square sized for the face, the neck and quick jobs around the sink.

How do you measure a towel?

Lay the towel flat and smooth, then measure the width and the length in centimetres. Size is the first thing to check when you compare towels, because the name on a label can mean different dimensions from one brand to the next. On the sizing page every VELVET towel is listed in centimetres.

Which towel size do you need?

  • One towel for the daily shower: The Heat.
  • A towel for the bath, after a swim or for lying wrapped for a while: The Immersion.
  • A towel for the basin: The Rest.
  • A towel for the face and for small jobs: The Temple.

If your bathroom has room for two sizes on the rail, pair The Heat with The Immersion. One is for the quick morning, the other for the long evening.

Can you use a bath sheet every day?

Yes. The only trade-off is space. A larger cloth takes longer to dry, so hang it open across the rail instead of folded in half. It also takes more room in the machine, so wash it with a lighter load. Our towel care guide covers the rest.

Is a bath sheet better than a bath towel?

Better depends on the person and the room. A bath sheet gives more cover and more cloth to dry with. A bath towel gives speed, a smaller wash and a lighter load on the rail. Many households keep both.

Both are woven from 100% cotton as a single two-sided cloth, soft on one side and dry on the other. Read how that cloth is made in One Cloth, Two Faces, or browse all VELVET towels.
